Language classes plus apartment
Language classes only
To participate in our Intensive Chinese Classes you have to meet the following criteria:
- You have to be at least 16 years old.
- You have to be able to speak and understand basic English as the lessons will be held in Mandarin and English.
- You have to commit for at least two weeks.
You can freely choose whether you want to take classes in Beijing or in Shanghai.
Additionally to our basic program you can book an apartment. All of our apartments are well equipped with Western style furniture and located in well situated parts of the city. Additionally our apartments are close to each other; so you can easily spend your time off with other program participants.
Due to the high population density in the urban areas of China, apartments there are much more expensive than in Europe or the US. Chinese standard apartments also have much less to offer than you might be used from home; e.g. the bathroom is usually a small cabin-like room combining toilet and shower, which offers little space.
Location in Beijing
In Beijing our apartments are located within the Dongzhimen business area and the embassy area (near the subway station Tuanjiehu), both very close to each other. These places offer a wide range of restaurants, cafés, bars and shopping malls. Many foreigners live here, why you will find easily Western products and can get to know other expats.
Location in Shanghai
Our apartments in Shanghai are located on Lianhua and Zhenping Street, not far in the North of Shanghai’s main business area. Here the surrounding is much more typical for China than in Beijing. You will find a wide range of traditional Chinese restaurants, a typical Chinese night market (8pm to 11pm) as well as shopping malls. You can easily reach the close by expat areas via subway.
In order to rent an apartment in China you have to place a deposit (usually three monthly rents) and to pay a special tax for foreigners, which is necessary to apply for the residence permit. To make a long story short: You would have to face quite a lot of formalities for little comfort.
Thus we recommend that you book an apartment in addition to your intern placement. By doing so we will take care of the related formalities and you won’t have to place any deposit. Also additional taxes as well as fees for gas, internet, electricity and water will be included in your rent.
Everyone who has already been working or living abroad knows how many formalities are to cover and that there will be always some uncertainties. Therefore we support you in advance to stay and of course during your stay.
The responsible program coordinators in China are also expats like you. This guarantees a good understanding of issues at hand from our side as they for sure already made the same experiences.
You are also welcome to ask any question you might have about our program before applying.
Amongst others our service includes:
The language classes take place five times a week. The beginner level courses start on the first Monday of each month – advanced level courses have no fixed starting date. The average class size is 4 to 5 students. From Monday to Friday you will have 4 hours of Mandarin classes each day. The books are for free and if you like you can also choose to learn Business Chinese.
Before starting your classes, one of our teachers will assess your language level in a 1:1 conversation and create your personalized curriculum. In addition to the traditional classes, you will get a free 6 months Skritter subscription, so you can learn independently during your time off.
All of our teachers are specialized in teaching “Mandarin for Foreigners”. The Intensive Chinese Courses can be roughly divided into two main areas: 1) Speaking & Listening Comprehension as well as 2) Reading & Writing. Since 2005 already over 3,000 participants have successfully been taking part in our Intensive Chinese Classes.
All of our partner schools are located in central areas of the city. In Beijing the classes are held in the city’s business & embassy district, Sanlitun. In Shanghai our partner schools lie within the beautiful former French governed part of the city.
Mandarin is the most commonly spoken language worldwide. To learn Chinese is an ideal way to boost your CV and offers you the chance to participate in China’s growing economical success. Furthermore, being able to communicate in Mandarin will give you the decisive competitive advantage during any job interview.
Within the East-Asian nations, Chinese is already replacing English as lingua franca of the business sector. If one takes into consideration that this area is being regarded as the world’s workshop, everyone will realize at once which great perspectives the Chinese language has to offer.
Our Intensive Chinese Classes provide you with the chance to learn Chinese or to improve your language skills on spot. You will receive a personalized curriculum allowing you to improve quickly – like 3,000 graduates already did before you. We also offer the option to take courses in Business Chinese.
The pure numbers alone make clear why learning Chinese will provide an excellent basis for your future: Mandarin has only around 982 million native speakers, and only 1.1 billion people worldwide are able to speak Mandarin. Taking into account that China itself has a population of 1.3 billion people, it becomes absolutely clear that there are only few people outside of China speaking Mandarin. Compared to English, which has 375 million native speakers and in total 1.5 billion people speaking English, one quickly realizes that English language skills are hardly a competitive advantage, but rather a must have.
Additionally China is one of the oldest cultures on earth, rich in traditions, philosophy and scientific achievements. However, in order to understand these and to persist within the Chinese economical world one has to speak the language. If you are for example interested in Confucianism, Taoism or Buddhism, learning Mandarin is your gateway to a holistic understanding of these ancient philosophies.
Our Star Exchange Intensive Chinese Classes offer you the perfect chance to improve your language skills directly in China!
You can choose freely whether you would like to stay in Beijing, the capital of China or in Shanghai, China’s financial hub.
The classes take place 4 hours a day, on 5 days weekly. The class size is 4 to 5 students in average. To adjust your curriculum to your personal language level, you will receive a 1:1 language assessment after arriving in China. The length of your studies is totally up to you: from 2 weeks on to over one year.
Finally in China
After your landing one of our colleagues in China will pick you up from the air port and go together with you to your apartment or your future school.
First you will receive an introduction course about general things you should keep in mind and about the area you are living in. You also will receive your welcome package (city map, SIM card, public transportation card).
On your first day one of our teachers will assess your language level in a 1:1 conversation and create your personal curriculum. With the coming Monday your language classes and your regular life in China will begin. Three times a week you can take part in different social activities together with your fellow students.
